High Cholesterol board

Quote from Bardda1:
Hi
I've been taking 40 mg of Provachol for about 18 months now. Previously I was taking 10 mg of Lipitor and my TC went from 280 to 212 and no side effects. Then I got a letter from my HMO saying that they would no longer pay for Lipitor because Provachol is cheaper and just as good. So I switched, but haven't been able to get in to get rechecked since I started it, so I don't even know if it's working. Just curious if anyone else has had good luck with Provachol. Not much mention of it here on these boards.

I don't think you'll get the same results with 40 mg Pravachol. Too bad it's an HMO you have to deal with. Keep us posted when you get the results.
As a result of taking Pravachol 40mg my total cholesterol reduced by 25%, LDL reduced by 50%, but my HDL was also reduced by 25%. The interesting thing is that my triglycerides went up by 30%. (Number are approximate). Pravachol caused me such leg pain I had to end it. I also had the same problem with Lipitor and Crestor. Recently I tired Tricor and
did not have good results with that either.
I also take 40 mg pravachol. I'm surprised that cost was a factor - I get 3 mos supply at a time mail-order and the cost on the pkg is over $300 for 3 months which I think is quite pricey (although I only pay HMO co-pay of $20 for 90 days). On the other hand my husband takes 10 mg. lipitor and it costs him in the 70s for 30-day supply.

I asked for pravachol so I could have grapefruit juice and eat grapefruit. Apparently that isn't recommended if one takes lipitor.

I've had no problem with the drug. It is not the strongest of the statin group and may not lower cholesterol as much as one would wish.
