Arthritis board

I'm sorry that you are having such bad pain, I know what it feels like. I've had similar flare-ups over the years and was finally diagnosed with fibromyalgia and lupus. Even though almost all tests i've had over the years come back in "normal" range.

As far as I know, Fibro is usually diagnosed by tender points on the body, fatigue, and muscle pains. From what you describe, it sounds more like an inflammatory arthritis that's going on with you right now. Especially if you notice swelling, joint stiffness, and warmth. But that could be caused by many different things. You might have an infectious arthritis or autoimmune disease going on. It's frustrating, though....b/c so many of those diseases are hard to pinpoint diagnose and many people go years & years without a diagnosis. I don't think fibro causes all those joint problems and from what I've seen others write, steroids usually make fibro worse. (Which is odd, b/c when I took prednisone, a steroid, all my joint pains, muscle pains, fatigue, headaches...everything, went away. Luckily my rheumy had me keep trying different meds until something worked for me.

Hopefully, they can rule out infection & if so, maybe they will give you an anti-inflammatory med to see if it helps..I hope they help you either way b/c sometimes tests don't show everything.
Thank you so much for your response.

My husband and I saw my rheumatologist today. She spent a good deal of time with us. We talked about my symptoms and she examined my hands, fingers, elbows, knees and ankles. Strangely, and I say this because I didn't think they were bothering me, my ankles were very tender to touch. Based on her examination, my doctor believes that I have developed RA. She advised that it is not at all uncommon for a FMS patient to develop RA, that it can happen almost overnight (as it did for me).

She had me go for bloodwork, although she reassured me that many patients have negative findings early on with RA. She is certain enough to immediately start me on Prednisone (5 mg. twice per day for one week and the once per day the second week). I return in 2 weeks for a follow-up.

I'm so grateful to have found this health board as the threads have been very informative.
Many thanks.
