Discussions that mention prozac

Hi. *Hugs* I actually have many of the same illnesses that you do -- obsessive-compulsive disorder (ocd), depression, social anxiety. I also have panic disorder. I take Prozac Weekly (an SSRI -- serotonin reuptake inhibitor) 3x a week. SSRI medications, by the way, help the brain to reuptake serotonin (a neurotransmitter) at the right time. Serotonin is supposed to play a role in a lot of anxiety disorders including ocd.

It helps me handle my obsessive thoughts a lot easier. I'd also received cognitive-behavioral therapy from a specialist in ocd/anxiety disorders for the ocd symptoms. That type of therapy helps the person to control their behavior in relation to their own thoughts. It helped me to handle my obsessive-compulsive symptoms better.

You may be able to go to your local library and borrow a couple books on ocd (until you find a therapist) including "Stop Obsessing!" by Edna Foa, and "Brainlock" by Jeffrey Schwartz. Both books include cognitive-behavioral techniques. Perhaps you may be able to find some local support groups for any of the difficulties that you're dealing with. They are usually free, and at least you will perhaps not feel so alone. They have support groups for everything these days, even for social anxiety.

Have you thought of talking to the school social worker about your current problems? He or she is part of a team of people (the child study team) that evaluates students (for free) educationally and psychologically, when the student is having difficulty in school, regardless of the reason. The team of people usually includes a school psychologist, learning disabilities consultant, and psychiatrist. Perhaps you can get support that way, and they may be able to refer you to a therapist who at least works on a sliding scale (one pays according to family's income). Wishing you the best :-)
