I've been taking Remeron for a year. I gained 12 pounds in 6 months but it stopped after that. I took Luvox for 2 years before that, but it seemed to stop working every 6 months and I would have to increase it. I've also tried prozac, paxil, zoloft, & manerix, but I didn't stay on any of them long enough to see if I gained weight because I either had side effects I couldn't tolerate, or they just didn't work for me.

I know I've been on Paxil, Welbutrin, Prozac, and Lexapro, and I haven't gained any weight. I think I've lost some, actually. I'm getting too damn skinny.
I used to be on Prozac, and I lost a little weight. I've just started Lexapro, and I have an increased appetite. I have not gained any weight, but I am really careful!! I'm hoping that the "hunger" feeling will wear off in time. Otherwise, I think I could very well gain weight on this med.

Genevra :)
Been on Prozac 2 years and I don't think it influenced my weight in any way.
Lost some for other reasons.

I gained weight on prozac and zoloft, they both made me feel as though I could NEVER get enough sleep...
Now I am on lexapro and wellbutrin for the last month, so far so good.
With prozac, I never knew what I was going to get.
Gain 20 or lose 20. I always thought my appetite could
be increased certain times of the year or "times of the month" on it. I have tried Lexipro (10mg.) Actually, thought I had a loss of appetite all day, but then watch out at 10pm! Munchie time.
'Tis frustrating isn't it, these meds?
I gained weight on prozac and was constantly hungry-
on zoloft, I only gained maybe 1-2 lbs and had no other side effects at all
on celexa, my weight did not change but I had some hair loss
Hi all...
I gained on Prozac and Paxil.
I used Prozac about 3 years ago and remember putting on weight.

Then this past year w/ Paxil I have put on probably about 20 pounds, and its not coming off thru exercise/diet.
I'm going to the dr's tomorrow , but I dont know what to do about it at this point!
I have been on various anti-depressants & here is what I have experienced as far as weight issues (My pdoc/docs are very careful with my meds as I have had eating disorders as well):
-Prozac (twice): no noticeable increased appetite/weight gain either time, but 2nd time I think I lost some weight as it decreased my appetite a little bit...did not help depression 2nd time around (being years later from 1st time)--it actually made it worse I think!
-Celexa: no extraordinary increase in appetite but hard to say as I was in treatment for the E.D.'s during this time period...was very good front-line but efficacy wore off.
-Lexapro (twice): 1st time this medicine felt like a gift or something--no appetite/weight incr. & I could really feel the depression lift with virtually no side effects. Was on max. dose (20 mg.) when it unfortunately stopped working for me. Later on I gave it a 2nd try because Zoloft was making me feel so nauseated during the day & on 10 mg. of the Lex. I had significant, almost uncontrollable incr. appetite and thus, some weight gain. It also was not helping my depression at the time.
-Effexor XR: I had a horrible time with this A-D med. (we think it may be that it mixed poorly with another of the medications I was on at the time) and had virtually no appetite on it. I didn't gain weight and maybe even lost some, but had to go into the hospital to quickly withdraw from it as I had a very bad reaction to it--obviously, I wasn't on it long--maybe a month or two.
-Zoloft (three times): 1st time, gained a bit I think because it made me ruminate about food as my appetite was increased, so I went off of it, even though it was helping the depression. 2nd time, no gain/appetite incr. but nausea all day long. I am currently on it again and dose has been upped from 50-100 mg./day, so we shall see. Been a little nauseous, but I have found this SSRI seems to work best for my depression in the long run of things!
-I refuse to try Paxil because of all of the weight gain hype surrounding that SSRI, and am even worried now about the Zoloft (always have been), although I try not to be. It has not upped my appetite (as of yet), so that is positive at least!

Wenron,
I am taking 30mg of Prozac. I have been taking it steadily now for nearly four months...give or take a little. I am also taking BC pills, which may also be influencing my weight. I also eat healthy foods, and I take vitamin supplements.

If I have gained any weight, it has only been 3 or 4 pounds...nothing significant. I've been trying to stay active, though, so this may be keeping the weight off.

Colleen
I took Celexa and gained close to 45 lbs. over the course of one year. I didn't feel like I was eating any differrently either.

I went off Celexa when I became pregnant. After giving birth, I weighed 20lbs less than I did when I got pregnant! Go figure. (healthy baby by the way)

Now, 3 months after having my baby, I was prescribed Prozac but haven't started taking them yet. I'm struggling with it. I felt so great when I was pregnant and I just don't want to go back... but I'm crying all the time over nothing. Looks like I'm getting depressed again.

Anyhow, If I start taking Prozac, I hope I don't gain weight because that in itself is depressing.
I was on lexapro for maybe 2+ months but then got off it (it didn't do anything for me except give me diarreah). As far as I noticed tho, it DIDN'T make me gain weight.

I took prozac b4 that for a short time...I loved! It made me feel so good. It was a very nice feeling, but a little to nice to be anywhere but by myself. It made me a total spaz, and I didn't want to act like that in front of other people (I'm sure u can understand) even tho it felt good. As far as I noticed, it DIDN'T make me gain weight.

Then I started paxil....started at 12.mg I believe it was, and when I got up to 37.5 that's the max. dose I ever took. I didn't notice it made me gain weight at that time, but read on, maybe it did.

Then while still on paxil, I worked my way up to 300mg's of wellbutrin, taking both together for about 11 months. Somewhere in this time I gained about 10 lbs. I'm not sure which one, or the combo. of both maybe, did it.....but it DID make me gain weight.

Now I've run out of money, no health care and can't afford it now. About 2-3 weeks ago I ran out of wellbutrin (and I'm feeling myself falling) so I haven't taken it in that length of time. I have 1/2 a pill of pax left (was trying to conserve cause I knew I couldn't get anymore anytime soon), and I stopped taking the pax now too.

To be real honest tho, I don't think the Pax ever really did any posotive things for me, but I wanted to keep taking it because I liked the idea of what it is supposed to do for u. My doc said ok, so I continued with it. Actually I think the pax did worse for me than good. But that's all besides the point.

What I'm saying is that I haven't taken wellbutrin for like 3 weeks, or the pax for like a week+ (except for a day here and there), and I still have this 10 lbs on me. Maybe it isn't the pax/butrin combo that made me gain it?

Ok, hope this helps....
I was a [removed]. Although I never checked any of the literature for this, I think part of the weight gain/loss problem may be related to the type of depression you experience. Typical is insomnia/loss of appetite, while atypical is lots of sleep/increase appetite. When I take antidepressants, I have experienced either decreased appetite/weight loss or no change. I have tried Prozac, Wellbutrin, Effexor and currently am on Lexapro. I wonder if some of the weight gainers were depressed and had typical depression? Maybe some of the weight gain is a return to baseline with the diminishment of depressive symptoms. Just something to think about...I am well aware that for many the weight gain is a lot and probably not related to this idea.

Prozac-lost weight
Wellbutrin-no change
Lexapro-so far no change, only 5 wks...decreased appetite though.
Effexor-no change
Remeron, I believe is an anti-depressant, gave me a voracious appetite! I have a compulsive eating problem anyway, but this just magnified it so many more times! I mean worse than PMS cravings (for the women out there ;-).

Remeron is supposed to have a sedative effect and that's why my dr. had put me on it several years ago (I took/take Prozac and insomnia's a side effect), but I had to stop the Remeron as I was gaining too much weight and feeling so out of control with my appetite. (Even though I had blood tests not too far before and they were negative.) Take care.
All of these meds have the potential to put on weight, some more than others and it depends on the individual.

I started on meds with Paxil about 10 years ago. I did put on a few pounds and over the course of 9 years I gained 15 lbs. I think it was in some part due to the meds but it was also probably a combination of changing stages in my life (graduating college, starting a desk job, my 20's).

In those 9 years, I tried Paxil, Celexa and Lexapro (the longest) as well as short stints with Wellbutrin, Zoloft, Prozac. Trying to get it right. I also took Lorazepam for a while.

A little over 1 year ago I went on 600 mg of Lithium (which is a fairly low dose) and the weight gain is by far the worst and very upsetting. I have gained 15-20 lbs in just that 1 year.

I am still on the Lithium b/c my sanity needs to come before weight but I also take Lexapro 10 mg, Wellbutrin (just started) and Klonopin (just started).
