Discussions that mention prozac

Bipolar Disorder board

Do you find that you experience any side effects other than the ones you mentioned in your post? Does it seem to make you sweat or perspire at all or cause vision problems? I was diagnosed with mild bipolar disorder several years ago and know that depression runs in my family. My doctor has had me on a couple of different anti-depressants off and on over the years (Prozac, Paxil, Wellbutrin, Zoloft), but I don't think any of these is specifically for bipolar. I need to be on something, but I'm really scared of the possible side effects. (I am also in my 15th day of detox from pain pills due to chronic back pain, so I feel really depressed and lousy right now.)

I am going to the doctor next week and need to know wht to ask for.

Thank you!

Yes I have Bipolar I with Ultra-Rapid Cycling and Mixed Episodes along with Borderline Personality Disorder so I also take Depakote, Xanax XR, and Seroquel & Lunesta for sleep.

Also I'm back to taking my Effexor at 37.5mg 2x a day. It seems like when I take 75mg at once it agitates me or something. May be too much for me. Also I feel more "balanced" taking it twice a day as I don't experience the feeling of it leaving my body. Strange feeling.

Good luck to you! I hope everything turns out well. :)

Oops forgot to mention that I haven't noticed any more perspiration or anything. My vision did do weird things the 2nd day I took all 75mg in the morning. I ended up spending the whole day in bed.

I dunno if Effexor is gonna work for me though. Not unless I take that small amount, divided up. I can't seem to tolerate more than that.
[QUOTE=Southbeachsun1;2963515]Someone on another thread suggested Lexapro. Have you ever tried that?? I don't know if it's just for depression or for bipolar disorder. I am going to do some research online. I appreciate your help.....I know everyone's different, but I'll take all the advice I can get!! Good luck to you!!

Thanx!
Hey there. I did try Lexapro but had absolutely NO ambition or motivation on it, if I remember correctly. And on even the tiniest amount of Zoloft I could no longer cry, it was weird. Prozac sent me absolutely CRAZY MANIC and is something I will never even attempt again. Cymbalta seemed like kind of a cross between Lexapro and Effexor. Not wanting to do as much but not as bad.

I have heard people say that they have no ambition on Effexor too. I did take it a few years back and it seems like I had less ambition then but I took it by itself before I knew I was Bipolar. And I took the immediate release version. All of these other meds I've taken with some kind of mood stabilizer and/or atypical antipsychotic. Which I highly recommend if you are Bipolar. Never take just an antidepressant by itself.

I hope my post has helped. I also hope whatever you try works out for you the 1st time and you don't have to try many meds like me. It's very hard to do that and also expensive! I wish you the best of luck!
