Discussions that mention pyridium

Urology board

Yes, there is a very good chance that the two issues are related and that the Augmentin will take care of both. The reason I say that is b/c when you have a Urinary Tract Infection and go to the Dr., the usually will culture it to find out the specific bacteria in order to use the right Antibiotic. (Different antibiotics destroy different bacteria. There are many types of bacteria that can infect the urinary system, (including E coli and Strep.) Since you have been d/xed with Strep throat, it is very likely that the bacteria in your urine is also Strep, (though in roughly 90% of cases, it is E-coli. Usually E-coli comes from getting small (even microscopic) particles of feces into the bladder when wiping after a bowel movement. EVen though we are all taught to wipe from front to back, it only takes a tiny spec to get wiped over there and then pushed into the bladder, (either from wiping or sometimes from sex.)

Anyway, in your case, it sounds like the Strep is the most likely culprit. (It can travel in your blood to anywhere in the body, thus infecting your throat and urinary tract.)

However, it is possible for you to have 2 different kinds of bacteria at work too, though it is very unlikely. After you finish the course of Augmentin, if you notice your throat feels better, but not the UTI, you definately need to drop off a urine sample at the Drs to have them culture it to see for sure. (When you call, make sure to let them know that you have been on antibiotics, and ask if it will mask the infection. If they say yes, ask how long you need to wait before it will clear out and no longer affect the lab results.)

While you are waiting for the abx to kick in, you might try going to your drugstore and buying AZO Standard (or whatever the generic version is.) It will turn your urine a different color, but it contains and antibacterial in it and also helps with the urgency, frequency, and burning. (If your Dr. already gave you Pyridium or another med that turns your urine a different color, then you dont need this too.) But, if he/she didnt, then it would probobly help you feel a bit better.

One more thing, it would be a good idea to try to eat some yogurt with live cultures in it to ward off a yeast infection. Alot of women get them whenever they are on antibiotics, since the abx kill the good bacteria as well as the bad. Most of the yogurt in the reg dairy section does NOT have live cultures. You need to look over in the Organic food section of the grocery. And, make sure it says on the package that it has live cultures.

If you get a yeast infection inspite eating the yogurt, most Drs. will r/x you a script of Diflucan over the phone after they've had a patient on abx. (Since it is very well known most of us get yeast infections after taking abx.) So dont hesitate to ask them to call it in for you if you need it.

Hope you get to feeling better soon!

Hugs,
Amy
