Back Problems board

HI Mike:

Although I am having some problems currently from my third fusion surgery I can tell you that my first two were very successful.

I crushed L1 and L2 in 1979 and they did the fusion and put in harrington rods. My recovery was difficult with two months in hospital and a body cast for 9 months after, but that was 24 yrs ago. Things have improved tremendously since. I had emergency surgery so there was no waiting time and fear....I couldn't feel anything below the waist after the fall. My second surgery was to refuse the same area and replace the long rods with smaller hardware which was 13 yrs later. The rods had broken and became dislodged. Had a four month recovery and was fine for another 10 yrs. I won't go into the details of my current situation but some may deal with the "domino effect". It's the stress on upper and lower discs that can wear and cause problems due to them now taking the brunt of the load, so to say...but I am an advocate for fusion surgery and except for some side effects of damaged nerves from the original fracture I've managed all these yrs....Hope that helps some...Jo H.
