I've been taking Lunesta since last October for insomnia. I began having touble sleeping when I returned from studying in Europe. Once home I was only sleep 2-3 hours a night, and only 1 hour at a time. This went on for 3 months before I got help from my doctor.

The Lunesta worked well, with the exception of a couple of weeks in March. I switched to Ambien CR, which caused sleep walking and nightmares, so then I went back to Lunesta, with great success.

Since May, the Lunesta has stopped working. I've gone back to 2-3 hours of sleep per night. This is extremely difficult because I am a full time graduate student and need the rest and the ability to concentrate.

I just went back to my doctor, who increased the Lunesta from 2mg to 3mg, since the drug rep's had reported that 2mg wasn't very effective in the real world. This hasn't improved my insomnia at all.

The only thing that helps is taking Xanax, but I don't want to do that because I need my Xanax during the day for my anxiety disorder! I don't want to ask for more Xanax and have to have a continuous level in my body at all times. This doesn't seem like a good idea.

I also suffer from depression from time to time and am dealing with it right now. (not caused by life circumstances at all). I've never tolerated the side effects of SSRI's, SNRI's, or the other reuptake inhibitors well, so my depression goes untreated (although I'm eyeing the new for of an old MAOI, selegiline, now available in a trandermal patch called EMSAM, but am not sure my family doc would be comfortable with an MAOI. Has anyone heard about this drug?) and the anxiety only controlled by Xanax.

What are my other options for insomnia? I know Remeron is completely different. What else is as effective, yet as mild as Lunesta? Maybe I do need a more sedating med, even though I hate that feeling.
