Discussions that mention seroquel

Sleep Disorders board

I have been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder type 1 for about 4 years now. For the last year or so, I have suffered from severe insomnia. I won't sleep for 2 or 3 days average a week. I don't just have trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep, I flat out don't sleep all night. I've tried sleep meds, benzo's, over the couter meds and prescription. I don't drink caffeine, I excersise 5 days a week, I limit my sugar intake. My bipolar meds are: Lithium, Abilify, Seroquel, Celexa and Tegretol. Does anybody have any suggestions?
Hi,

I'm seventeen and also bipolar and have sleep problems occasionally, but not continuasly...it sounds that you're manic. Seroquel usually helps with sleep - it sedates, but if you're manic, it might not work. I used to be on it, but it interfered with my schoolwork because I couldn't focus. The only dose of Seroquel that worked for me was 400mg. for sleep, but because it continued throughout the day, I stopped it. Abilify is supposed to help with sleep as well, but it didn't for me. Other than that, I don't know much about the meds...I don't take the others so I'm not sure. I'd discuss this with your psychiatrist to see if he/she has a suggestion or perhaps a change of meds or a dosage change.
