Discussions that mention suboxone

Pain Management board

Patty. Norspan will NOT force you into withdrawals. On the patient CMI sheet it states that patients starting Norspan Should continue with pain meds, reducing the dose as the patch takes effect. Make an appointment with your doctor and take the info sheet with you to discuss issues. In the USA Buprenorphine is only available as Suboxone and Subutex to drug addicts. Its prescribed in ridiculously high doses of up to 32 mg. Doctors in the USA do a pathetic 8 hour course which still leaves them illequiped to deal with the prescribing and regulation of the drug.

Norspan is delivered in Micrograms, the highest dose being 2x20 mg patches for the present time. I have been on Norspan for 9 months with great [email protected] 2x20 mg or 40 mg, the maximum dose. My doctor actually prescribes double numbers of patches So I can change them every 3 days, due to the fact that any longer makes me start to blister at the patch site, which Concerned my doctor So We went the every 3 day route, which is a small price to pay of for good pain relief.

As I Said, Norspan isn't even available in the USA and neither is the oral form, Temgesic which is an oral Microgram dose. the difference between Buprenorphine as an addiction med and as a pain med is vast. You and I are on an analgesic dose and addicts are on an addiction dose. You and I: micrograms, Them: milligrams. Hope this helps.

Hi Plakat, I just wanted to first of all say thankyou to you for sharing this information because it is just what I have been searching for for the past week!

I have been prescribed oxycontin 100mg a day for brittle bones disease, and I have been on it now for 8 months and I no longer want to live my life this way! I went to my local GP here in Cairns recently and he told me about a new drug called "NORSPAN" which you have been discussing! I have heard so many different opinions about this drug and I have been just hoping so much to talk to someone who actually is using it!

There are a few questions I have, and I would sincerely appreciate your help! First of all, do I have go off the Oxycontin for a few days before I can put on the patch?
What strength would you reccommend for me going from a strong painkiller like Oxycontin 100mg?
How long does it take for the patch to work & can you use oxycontin whilst you are using Norspan?
Is there any euphoric effect from Norspan? What are the pro's and cons of this drug?
Can the Norspan patches accidently overdose you?
How are the patches applied? Do you do it yourself or is it done for you? How many patches do you get?
Does the patch really last for a full week as stated?
And finally can you become physically and mentally addicted to this drug?

Thankyou so very much! I appreciate it more than you know! I am excited about trying NORSPAN but at the same time I am extremely afraid and nervous! I am supposed to start work in a office in 2 weeks time and I want something that can keep me on a even keel without experiencing the horrors of a oxycontin withdrawal! I am hoping that NORSPAN will be my miracle drug... I have my fingers crossed! Thanks again.... James.

This is not quite true. It is true that this drug is only available as a sublingual pill in the form of Suboxone(buprenorphine&naltrexone) or Subutex(buprenorphine). It is being tried for people with chronic pain although with limited success. The big problem is that it has a ceiling effect so after hitting a certain dose, a higher dose will give no better pain relief. That is one of only several drawbacks. The other is that it is only available in a sublingual pill that you place under the tongue and have to let dissolve and this can involve up to 8/day @ 4mg = 32mg max dose

p.s. I have not really heard many good things about this drug pain wise but I would like to know if people are having success at all. Be aware that one of the side effects is actually PAIN, specifically back pain. So if you have never had back pain before and you go on it and get back pain, you know it's a side effect
