Thyroid Disorders board

Meep is the most knowledgeable and respected poster I've encountered on this board since I've been here. Use the advanced search feature to look up his posts to see what I mean. He has read more medical studies and literature than a professional MD has. Even he doesn't treat himself, and he doesn't recommend anyone else should either. It takes the guidance of an expert to help you through the ins and outs of this stupid disease.

If you want to know what "dangerous" things can happen, listen up! My mom was given Synthroid by the regular quack MD she had gone to for a long time. He apparently didn't know that in a person past 50, the med should be prescribed in small doses and increased very gradually. The atrium in her heart went into a fibrillating rhythm, formed a large clot. Part of the clot broke off and travelled to her brain, resulting in a massive stroke which incapacited her. She lived the rest of her life... 10 long years... in a nursing home.
Some people are luckier.... they suffer massive heart attacks and die right away.
It can happen to younger people too, especially those who don't seem to know how much they don't know about all this.

One woman here who was hell-bent on treating herself got a hold of some Armour in 2 grain tablets. She intended to start on such a massive dose. Several of us tried vehemently to talk her out of it, but I don't know what happened after that. I hope she's ok, but who knows?

Long story short.... You don't know enough about this to do-it-yourself. Until you have seen every last doctor in your town.... until you're willing to pay out-of-pocket, if necessary.... I strongly urge you to rethink this risky plan.

You too, Lady. Same goes for you.
