Thyroid Disorders board

Oh...I ran into MAJOR problems being UNAWARE of what calcium would do to the absorption of my thyroid meds...and OH MAN ~ did I learn the HARD WAY! I was taking a calcium suppliment just before I went to bed for a whole month or more...and day by day I was going down hill. Until I went looking for "why" and I read about what calcium does!

Here I was thinking I was doing "GOOD" for myself getting added Calcium like they tell us woman too...and it really effected me bad. Once I quit it, my thyroid meds kicked back in and I was OK? Lesson was learned.

Is it better to dissolve under the tongue? OR is it only for certain thyroid meds? I've not heard of this before. I take synthroid.

AS long as you take your meds at least 4 and preferably 8 hours from when you take your Calcium, it shouldnt be a problem to take calcium.

I dissolve my Armour and my Unithroid under my tongue, so I have to worry less about when and what I eat. Synthroid also dissolves well, and it shouldn't be a problem to take it that way.
Thanks for your reply Meep. I was taking my calcium at night before I went to sleep, and I take my thyroid med in the morning. I guess, untill I see someone about this that is informative and helpful (Dr.) I'm just going to take a pass on the added calcium supplement. I get some in a multivitamin I take, so I get "some"...but I won't put myself through THAT experience again. Thank you for your advice, none the less.

I will also give that a try in taking my thyroid medicine tomorrow. I don't mind the taste of synthroid, it's rather sweet I think. Thanks! Lynn

I'd be interested in trying this. Can you explain why dissolving under the tongue works differently than swallowing?

Thanks much
Nornie
I did this "under the tongue" this morning....and it wasn't a big deal...as I said, synthroid tastes sweet...and it dissolves rather fast.

I too am interested in how it helps absorb it faster? That's what I'm assuming the benefit of it is?

JustKos,

What I do is take it right as soon as I wake up. Now it's automatic. I take water to bed usually the night before anyways....and I just take it before I even GO anywhere! Perhaps this would be good for you IF you then shower and get dressed for the day, and perhaps enough time will have passed before you eat your breakfast. I've never waited 2 full hours....but I do take it on an empty stomach and give it some time.

Hope this helps?

Lynn

My daughters doctor said the only thing I had to watch was soy, she did not say anything about calcium! I didn't realize this was something I should be concerned about!

Yes, that's why these boards are so invaluable. My doctor told me NOTHING about foods, just to wait an hour before eating.

Incidentally, what I have been doing, is I usually automatically wake up at around 5:00. But I don't need to get up till 7, so I keep water and pill at bedside and take it at 5, then sleep for 2 hours and get up at 7 and am all set to have my breakfast. However, occasionally I do oversleep and don't take it at 5am, so I learned (in this thread) that you don't have to wait as long to eat if you dissolve the pill under your tongue. Well, I did oversleep this morning, so that's what I did. I sat up in bed, put the pill under my tongue, but yikes, I fell asleep sitting up! When I woke up, pill was gone, had weird taste in my mouth, so I assume it all got dissolved. If I do that again I guess I'll get up out of bed, don't really like falling asleep with a pill in my mouth, even one as small as synthroid!

The most common things that affect thyroid med absorbtion are Calcium, Iron, Carafate (a stomach ulcer medication), Aluminum (in many antacids), and fiber. What does that tell you about having cereal and milk for breakfast? :(

Assuming you are consistent - i.e. eat same amount of fiber and milk for breakfast every day - couldn't that then be taken care of by a dosage adjustment (asusming you're not already on the highest dose)? I would think the worst thing would be if 3 days you have eggs, then 2 days you have fiber +milk, then 2 days you have bacon, then eggs, then fiber, etc. But if every day you have a 4 oz of fiber and 8 oz milk, and say you're on 50mcg synthroid, and 20% of that is not getting absorbed due to food interference, would an increase in dosage help maintain levels?

Since the level of absorbtion is not as predictable when taking thyroid meds with food and supplements with iron or calcium as it is wehn taken on an empty stomach, I can't recommend it. On the other hand, some people have had good luck like that, and Consistencey is the key.

Realize that a growing child may have quickly changing dietary needs and may or may not eat all that is on their plate from day to day, too. It may be hard to compensate for that reliably.

To me, it makes more sense to me to take it at bedtime and get the best absorbtion that you can, naturally, than to take it with or near breakfast and worry about how consistent and predictable absorbtion will be. Interestingly, people who take their meds at bedtime actually report that once they have switch to taking it then, they sleep more restfully than when they were taking it in the morning.

I guess that I am such a stickler for everything being just right, because I have disciplined myself to be that way, that I wonder if I am too careful sometimes.

Actually Meep, I think your right on track in that thinking! I'm trying to learn all that I can so that I can become that disciplined myself! I know what you mean about feeling "too careful" ~ but, since the world isn't interested in my well being SOMEONE HAS TOO BE! lol ~ I guess that leaves OURSELVES!!

I personally appreciate that quality in someone...because as I'm coming to realise that I am my best advocate, disipline goes hand in hand with that attitude! We just have to keep our rational logical mind about us and we will FAIR better then most!

This condition has so may symptoms to keep on top of.....that it feels at times like it's a continual juggling act. But...the MORE we can figure out, or try for our improvement the better we will be in the long run. That discipline is exactly what helps us figure out what we are doing wrong or right!

So, I'm here to encourage your strength Meep!

DOGTIRED ~ Thanks for saying so! I'll try to keep my self consciousness IN CHECK ....just....because you said so! :D ~ oh...let's face it, I'm FFFFARRR TO BIG A BIG MOUTH to be quiet for too dang long anyways! lol :o ~ just remember Dogtired...when I get to annoying..it's all YOUR fault! LOL ~just kidding! :D

Last night I decided to try taking my synthroid at night, dissolved under my tongue and.....I "think" I feel I did sleep better??? ~ jury's still OUT on this....but, I want to see IF I truely see a difference, or it's wishful thinking? LOL I'm VERY gullable. lol :o None the less, I LOVE experimenting for just the HOPE of improvement! Thanks for the suggestion!
[QUOTE=Sherriof WV]Just posted and I didn't see it come up.....but very interesting I will be listening in for more info on this subject did anyone try to dissolve Lev- thyroid meds? Sherri

I have done Unithroid and Synthroid both that way (both are levothyroxine just like Levoxyl), but haven't tried Levoxyl or any generic that way. The Synthroid has a slightly sweet taste because of the lactose and confectioner's sugar in it. The Unithroid is a neutral taste. Neither of them are bad.

Armour also has a mildly sweet taste.
Yea I would like to do that (take thyroid meds at night), but I take my BC Pill at 11pm so no go for synthroid until the morning. (No way in heck am I depending on my befuddled mind to remember BC when I wake up)...

I think once I switch back to brand name (on generic right now because I am poor, but it sucks and tastes like paste w/o water) I will try waking up early and letting it dissolve.... seeing as though I hit snooze repeatedly anyway LOL!!
