Discussions that mention tenormin

Pain Management board

Hi Marlena:

You mentioned that the migraines run on your mom's side of the family. I too have a long history of migraines. Since age 7 and I'm 44 now. Unfortunately I cannot use Immitrex, Zomig, Amerge, or any of the other "migraine" meds because of potential of heart attacts....my doctor would not even let me try them....I have a high heart rate 160...I take a beta blocker (Tenormin) to get it down to around 100...

I am the baby of 7 and my ENTIRE family has migraines. When I hit puberty they went away until when I was 28 I had to have an emergency hysterectomy due to Severe Endometriosis that caused my heart rate (terrible hormone imbalance) to go up to 160 and would not come down...as soon as the surgery was over the migranes returned....sortof on a cycle...slowly at first, then by age 35, they were occuring every day....they gradually became so bad that I was having two and three a day with classic aura's....My doctor was prescribing fiornal #3 and Tylenol#3 and I was alternating them with every other headache. About 4 times a year I would end up in the ER with a headache that I just couldn't break the cycle.....and the last time I went they gave me a "cocktail" of morphine, phenegran, valium, and benedryl......that broke the cycle....but I still was having the severe headaches everyday....We tried everything.....I was on several preventatives....Tenormin (beta blocker..also for heart rate), paxil 25 mg, neurotin 300mg 2x daily, and 50 mg Pamelor at night.....AND I was STILL getting the headaches daily....

This past April my doctor decided to try TOPAMAX which is an anti-seizure medication which many doctors are using with migraine sufferers with much success. It has been my miracle drug. I have had only ONE headache since April, and that was when Hurricane Charley entered the Gulf of Mexico in Early August. My headaches were made worse by weather conditions, specifically barometric pressure....how weird is that....Anyway....I now take 75 mg of Topamax a night....and have lost 60 pounds since April because one of the "side effects" is weight loss.

To answer your question, I think yes a PM Clinic will work with you to help you become as comfortable as possible with your headaches. One of the huge drawbacks of Topamax is that it is VERY expensive.....But it is a preventative....Immitrex, Zomig, and the other so called Migraine meds require you to have the pain FIRST, then you use the meds....Topamax is a maintenance/preventative drug...you take it daily....

I saw on one of the boards...I think it was the Back Board or maybe even this board a thread about how to get medicines for free and how to see if you qualifiy. You may want to check that out, then if you find a doctor, you may want to see if they think that Topamax is an option for you since you are having daily headaches. My co-pay is $42 for that drug, and that's the most I pay for any drug....There is no generic form for it yet....so that's why it's so expensive.....

I hope I've answered some of your questions. I can definitely "feel your pain". I know what you're going through. Hang in there. There is hope if you find the right meds. Topamax like I said has been my "miracle drug"....Good luck hun: I wish for us all to have many pain free days ahead in the near future.

Hugs,
