Discussions that mention timolol

High & Low Blood Pressure board

The drugs are really quite similar, even to the point that they are both primarily BETA-1 selective (whereas propranolol, nadolol, timolol are non-selective and cause more diverse effects.)
Atenolol is usually considered the better drug because it has a longer half life (thus a steadier dosing) and less CNS (central nervous system) penetration than Toprol (metaprolol-extended).

Now that's the chapter and verse, but people are different- I like propranolol MUCH better than atenolol (although both cause me insomnia)- and if the Toprol treats you better TAKE TOPROL. Of course you know that the Toprol costs 3 times as much but neither will break the bank.
If it's a lifetime drug, every effort should be made to make it as tolerable as possible.
