each person reacts differently. i had mine taken out when i was 31. wasnt that bad. there are a few tricks to keeping it that way. 1st and foremost......the pain meds will most likely be narcotics....they WILL constipate you....so BEFORE surgery, go ahead and get started on LOTS of fiber.....get you something like the metamucil mix, take fiber tabs as well, and stool softeners. TRUST ME...no one told me that narcotic pain meds will constipate you!!! So please dont take this lightly!!! secondly.......the way i done it....i was taking tylenol w/codeine....dosage was every 4 hours...HOWEVER...I took it every 3-3.5 hours...so that its effectiveness would be constant!! Thirdly.....DRINK DRINK DRINK plenty of water....ALWAYS keep that water bottle in your hand!!! if you allow your throat to get dry....OH MY! It will KILL you to drink something once you allow it to get dry (say like when you are sleeping, and pain meds run out of effectiveness while you are asleep)......BUT...you have to FORCE yourself to get that water in you...so that you can get your throat moistened again. I never lost my voice....the moments right after surgery....my voice wasnt "normal"...i could only talk in a quiet mode...not a whisper, just not regular tone....but that didnt last but maybe a day or two. eating.....you will not be able to eat solids for a couple of weeks, and they will have a different taste for a while. definitely no carbonated sodas!!! if you do drink them.....it will HAVE to be room temp....because cold carbonated drinks will BURN going down!!!!!

personally.......i dont think it was that big of a deal. bleeding???????????? only if there is a problem!!! i bled for about 2 minutes after waking from a nap the same day of the surgery (i was outpatient)....by the time hubby called the dr....it had stopped. the problem is IF it doesnt stop bleeding...then you will have to go to the doctors office..or ER.....there is a good chance that you will experience no bleeding at all.

i have a friend that SHOULD get her tonsils out...but she is frightened....no matter what i say.........BECAUSE someone told her that she would bleed for about 2 months!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO not true!!!

if you are able to get the surgery done right after school ends..during the time you are hoping....you should be up to par to going on your vacation. may not be able to eat the great foods yet....but energy wise, pain wise....you should be fine!
