High & Low Blood Pressure board

I was diagnosed with high blood pressure 3 months ago. I am 23 years old and this was a shock to me. I don't think I can blame anyone but myself though, although my family has a history of high blood pressure. I am 6'0 and 285 lbs. I also am very prone to anxiety. Also suffer from GERD. I did weigh around 185 five years ago but overindulged in college food and laziness. First visit it was around 130/90 and the next two visits it peaked around 150/100. I was told to start losing weight immediately.
After this visit I was prescribed Uniretic once a day. I was on it for about 2 months. My last visit I went in and the nurse told me I was at 166/98 or so. I couldn't believe it, even after being on medication. I am very prone to anxiety attacks when visiting the doctor for fear he will tell me something bad. He usually takes my blood pressure again after awhile once I have calmed down and it is always lower then the first. The second time he took it, it was around 138/80 something so I guess the medication is doing its job. I asked the doctor if he thought I could ever get off this medication after losing weight. I did manage to lose 10 pounds. He said we could possibly reduce it and that he has seen patients get off of it before but usually when they undergo gastric bypass surgery and lose 100 pounds or more.
I guess my question is have you or anybody you know been able to stop taking these medications after making life changes. Good luck to you all.
