TMJ Disorder -TemporoMandibular Joint board

Good morning!

Does anyone else take Valium or Xanax (or something similar) before bedtime to inhibit clenching? I have been taking .25 mg of Xanax at bedtime for several months and I don't seem to clench at all when I take it, but I've noticed that I only sleep soundly for about 6 hours. Because it says on the bottle to take it four times a day for anxiety (by writing it this way, my GP can get me larger amounts at a time so I don't have to pay as much copay on refills), I assume that means its effects last for about six hours. If I take it at 10 and go to bed, I wake up around 4 and then only doze fitfully until the alarm goes off at 6. Can anyone relate?

Thanks!
I was on Klonopin (which is a bendzodiazpine- same family as Xanax and Valium) for several weeks for clenching. It didn't help me from clenching (neither did Valium or Xanax), though I was definitely in a deeper sleep. I also awoke more groggy in the morning. I definitely did not wake up earlier in the night, although I only sleep about 5-6 hours per night anyway. My understanding is that Klonopin is in the system for a shorter amount of time than Valium, but longer than Xanax. So you might want to try taking a benzodiazapine with a shorter half-life than what you are currently on.
