Anxiety board

Dear Andrew:

So sorry to hear you are suffering. Many of us have been where you are. You've come to a good place for feedback.

First of all, I think you can stop punishing yourself for experimenting with street drugs. I don't think there is any solid evidence that drugs are the cause of panic disorder. A lot of people think there may be a link because of the coincidence of the first panic episode coming around the time of the use. My opinion is that we are predisposed to have anxiety problems. It often runs in families and therefore would suggest it is genetic. Your worry, or possible guilt, about using the drugs was compounded by a lot of other stressful things going on in your life that were new to you too, besides the drugs. I think too much stress is the cause of panic attacks.

It sounds like you need some medical intervention. You should really try your best to be honest with your doctors about your fears. They need to know these things so they can help you. They won't judge you. The more fears you can put to rest, the better you'll start to feel. I also think you might need some medication, preferably some type of antianxiety medicine like Xanax or Valium. I guess it's not as easy to get in the UK, but there must be exceptions. Maybe another antidepressant would be helpful. Until then, remember to take deep, even breaths, as we often forget to breathe properly when we are panicking. This is very helpful.

Also, I would get checked at the doctor for the metal taste. You might have dental problems, gastric problems, some type of excess metal in your system needing a blood test, etc. Maybe you aren't drinking enough water and it's a simple fix, but I think you should get that checked.

Good luck to you. Keep us posted on your progress and let us know if we can help.
