Back Problems board

About 2 years ago, I started to get pain in my lower back (left side only). The pain was isolated and I could stick my finger precisely to the spot where it hurt. The pain would come in lightning flashes that would make my legs buckle from under me. It became a running joke between all my friends that my (insert screaming) BACK hurts, since I would scream out "Ahhh my back." and then buckle to the ground.

I went to see my doctor and she ordered a bunch of tests including bloodwork and an MRI. The result of the MRI was DISC NARROWING at L4/ L5. She told me that most everyone has a little disc narrowing and to see a neurosurgeon if I wanted.

I felt dismissed.

I have been seeing a new doctor since then... We have tried relafen, naprosyn, vicodin, flexeril... etc. But the pain has gotten worse. The doctor just this month (after seeing him about a year) got the results from my MRI and suggested physical therapy. I will begin next week.

I went to a chiropractor a few weeks ago. I was frustrated with my doctor and thought maybe the chiro could help. He took x-rays and said that I had a pretty serious DISC COMPRESSION at L4/ L5 and that my body was suffering from over compensating for the pain.

About me: Im 28. I work out 5 times a week. I am 5' 10 and a muscular 145lbs. I leg press about 150 lbs, curl 45 lbs but cant bend over to touch my toes. I cant squat or dead-lift and lately I have become very skilled at the art of picking things up with my toes.

The pain: It is a dull pain all day long. 4 - 5 times a day a lightning bolt shoots through my butt and makes me shake like Ive been electocuted (just for a second).

I guess Im looking for a similiar story. Dont you think a 2 year old MRI is inadequate information? Shouldnt my diagnosis (to take to physical therapy) read more than "lower back pain."

How do you find someone who beleives the pain is as bad as you say it is?
