Back Problems board

I recently started taking 25 mg of amitriptyline at bedtime with the idea of increasing the dosage to 100 mg over a period of time. The NS is giving me this for pain management. He told me to stop taking vicodin. However, the pain is almost unbearable during the transition period. My pharmacist said there is no problem medically in taking vicodin at the same time as amitriptyline. I had a micro foramenectomy 8 weeks ago and apparantly I have a nerve that is causing my extended problems. Is anyone else combining these drugs?

I am taking them both, Amitripyline 50mg twice a day and vicodine for back and muscle pain. Amitriptyline is also used for depression but they found out it also works for nerve pain.

Good Luck,

I have been taking amitriptylene for 20 years and have used it while taking many other meds. I don't understand why some doctors are prescribing it as a pain killer. It is not a narcotic...it is an anti-depressant. Most doctors prescribe it to be taken at bedtime to help with sleep and many patients with fibro and/or chronic fatigue syndrome take it regularly for that reason. Personally, I think these doctors are trying to trick patients into thinking they are being treated for their pain. Vicodin and ami are no problem taken together other than the fact that you might get awfully sleepy. I get so aggravated when I read where an ortho or NS is putting someone on ami for PAIN. You might want to think about finding another doctor to get a second opinion about this.

Good luck.

Carol, I won't argue the point but you may want to do some researh on this before telling someone it's not true. I have nerve damage and was on Methadone, methadose, oxycontin and morphine not at the same time but over the years. I still have nerve pain and the pain is controlled by taking vicodine and Elavil generic name is amitriptyline. It is working for me.
