Discussions that mention vicodin

Addiction & Recovery board

I've been clean and sober for many years, through N.A., but this last week was my first surgery ever. Last week I had piece of bone cut out of my jaw and implanted in another part of my mouth as part of a tooth implant procedure.

I was apprehensive because I had to go under almost total anesthesia, first time for me, but especially because the doctor prescribed Vicodin and told me the pain and swelling afterward would be tremendous, much worse than after wisdom tooth removal (which, incidentally I have never had to experience either). I consulted my support group - my sponsor in N.A., as well as my medical team - my regular dentist (who knows my addiction past) and the oral surgeon who was performing the surgery. In the end, the doctors said that they could recommend only ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) or the Vicodin, and didn't know of anything in between. For future reference, does anyone know of a non-narcotic in between?

Anyway, luckily, the pain wasn't so bad or maybe it was but the thought of taking opiates, when my addiction history was primarily opiate related, was worse than the pain. So, now, a few days after surgery my jaw is VERY swollen and there is still pain - but - I've taken nothing but Advil and I am feeling very GOOOOD.
It's now been almost three weeks and while most of the pain is gone, I am still taking an Advil here and there. I am REALLY glad I never started down the path of taking any narcotics because given that I still need some pain relief, I'd probably be hooked on Vicodin by now for sure.

As far as Toradol, a fellow recovering addict mentioned that to me when she saw me at a meeting the day after my surgery, but Toradol is apparently used only for a five day regimen - my pain has lasted far longer than five days!

hi there,
glad to see your post and especially glad to hear you are feeling alittle better. it does help to have that extra support through other recovering addicts such as those at your meetings(sponsor etc..) be very proud of yourself that you did the right thing for you. just goes to prove that it can be done. the motrin does help the swelling much better than any narcotic. you sure have done very well and made the right choice for you. with each passing day you will get better. take care.:)
