Discussions that mention vicodin

Bowel Disorders board

I just had my hemorrhoid surgery yesterday afternoon. I was really scared at first because I was reading everybody's comments on message boards, and they were saying it was the worse pain ever. I thought it was going to be really bad for me because I've never had kids before, and usually they say "you don't know what pain is until you've had kids!";)

Yesterday when I woke up from anesthesia, I had pain, but it wasn't so bad to the point where I wanted to cry. They gave me 3 doses of demerol and I was pretty ok. Maybe because I'm pretty young (28 years old) that I'm recovering better than most people?

Today I woke up in slight pain, I've been prescribed Vicodin, and have been taking it around the clock since yesterday, which knocks me out. I'm going to try not to take it as much today since it can be quite constipating. I find that walking around the house helps.

I decided to log on since I'm going to be housebound for the next week or so and hope my input can help others. Everybody's input scared the heck out of me, so I decided that I should post my experience so others can see some good experiences also (not that this is any fun, but it's not as bad as everybody described). I'm also a registered nurse, so I was really adamant about requesting certain things from my doctor to ensure my comfort and am here to answer any medical related questions anyone out there may have. :)
Thank you Sherri for the advice. I haven't had a bowel movement yet, but am definitely bracing myself for the pain. I have been on docusate sodium since last night, took 2 last pm and two this am. I already stopped taking the Vicodin because I know it can be quite constipating. I've been taking Tylenol only every 6 hours for the pain, it seems to be ok so far.

My doctor gave me Analpram cream for before and after bm's. My whole diet today has consisted of dietary fiber (bran cereal, oatmeal, apples, fiber one bars). I've been making it a point to drink at least 2 liters of water a day. Any other advice you can give us Sherri on bowel movements?

Amber, good luck on your sugery, let us know how you're doing afterwards.
Thank you every one for your advice! I think I will go buy some Miralax and try that. :)

I had my first BM this morning! It wasn't bad at all, it was self-propelling and soft. My butt was sore for 30 minutes afterwards though, I gingerly cleaned it with a moist cottonball and then sat in warm water for 5 minutes.

I have to admit, I was very scared yesterday because I didn't have a BM and don't want to get impacted. Throughout the day I had eaten alot fiber (apples, oatmeal, bran cereal, fiber one bars), drank a lot of water, took docusate sodium, and still nothing. I took 3 teaspoonfuls of Mineral oil to soften the stool, but it didn't make me go. I took MOM 30 ml and nothing. I woke up this morning, at a bowl of bran cereal, and had to go! I put some super duper numbing cream on my butt (it's triple numbing cream, has lidocaine Benzocaine 20%, Lidocaine 6%, and Tetracaine 4%), and I hardly felt the stool coming out. I hope the rest of my bm's will be as good as the first one!!

I'm no longer taking Vicodin (I stopped yesterday, which was the day after surgery). Only taking Tylenol 325mg every 4 hours for pain now.

Amber, you have to make sure you still eat. If you don't eat much, there won't be much for your body to make into stool, and the rectum needs the sensation of being full in order to send a signal to your brain that you have to defecate.

Thanks everyone for your support and advice. It's so nice to find a community of people who understands what we're going through!
