Back Problems board

Hello, I'm new to the board.

I had a fusion on July 1st. I had a recurrent herniated disc at l5-S1, herniated disc at L4-L5, osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, ddd... I had already had a diskectomy in 1998 when I was 19-years-old. I had begun suffering from a lot of left leg pain again, and my right leg began to bother me as well.
My right leg problems were resolved with the surgery. I did not have a disc herniation on that nerve- I had an osteophyte(bone spur). Both L4 and L5 had movement in them, so I had a 2 level fusion with bone from my right hip.
I'm still having a lot of left leg pain. The dr put it bluntly to me 'the nerve was badly beaten up'. It could take 6 months to tell if the surgery was a success for pain relief. (Fusion has already begun) And I'm in a LOT of pain, just like pre-surgery. I take 2400mg of Neurontin and Vicoprofen for break-thru pain. He started me out on 1200mg of Neurontin, and that took the edge off but not enough. I have good days and bad days. I overdid it shopping with my mom yesterday, so I can already tell that this will be a bad day with my left leg already hurting this morning. Wish I could have slept in, but our toddler had other ideas...
I would be glad to answer in questions that you or anyone else might have about fusions, since it's obviously still fresh on my mind. You can email me at [email protected]
