Quote from morrison11: Yeah course I can go out when in a car, but if I was with someone who was going to go in stores i would just say I would wait in the car. I am just a weird person. This whole brain drama is causing me not have a job. Its like I am afraid of people or something.
Morris, first of all you are not weird. Many many many people have the same thing you have as you can tell from just reading these boards. I also have bad anxiety and had agoraphobia on and off since i was 11. I am now 26. Like you, I have felt (and still do at times) like it is ruining my life, which has only just begun!! Some of the things that helped me when I was going through bouts of agoraphobia were to "practice" small trips, like walking to the corner by yourself. After you do that without anxiety, go to the closest store to your house by yourself, and keep going until you can go farther places. Always know that you can get out if you need to, and if you are with people, let them know ahead of time that you are prone to panic attacks and you may need to leave all the sudden if you are out with them. At least then they won't think you're weird for doing the things you do sometimes, that has helped me sooooo much!! People are pretty understanding if you are just honest and let them know what is going on.
Also, some of the other things that help me are "distractions," such as chewing really high flavor gum (like Dentyne Ice), or something that keeps your mind off it a little, driving with the windows all the way down, listening to music, etc. As for jobs, maybe you can find something temporary for a while, like through a temp agency. Then you can "feel it out" without being committed to it. Some temp jobs only last a day or two, and if it doesn't work out, you don't have to stay at it.
Finally, have you tried any tranquilizer meds like Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, etc? Xanax has been my saving grace. I would be housebound if it wasn't for Xanax. None of the anti-depressants I took helped at all. You may want to ask your doctor if you can try one.
I have come out of it, I still have anxiety, but at least I can enjoy life now. I know you can too. Good luck.
