Anxiety board

I guess i asked the wrong question, since I was on Xanax when writing..HAHA.
I want to know if it takes awhile being on Xanax to get benefits or is it just for one time use when having a stressful day or so.

I was on Xanax for about 6-8 months when I was in my early 20's. It helped to take the edge off, but was addictive. I had to be "wheened" off it slowly.
xanax can be taken every day but is better if only taken when really needed, you should also learn how to relax and calm yourself

xanax is a short acting med, a dose usually only lasts a few hours, a tablet in the morning wont last all day, there are other xanax type meds that last longer
I'm a big advocate of the Xanax XR (extended release formula) it lasts ALL day and there is complete relief. I take 1MG in the morning and don't think about it again. It's miraculous and I've not had to increase my dose. You should try that instead of having to think about taking another Xanax every 4 hours and then again...it just becomes all consuming to have to think about it and then you feel the breakthrough anxiety and it's a vicious circle. I"m a huge fan of the XR and I've been told the addiction potential is less as well as the tapering process easier. Just my opinion
Bondgrll, are you still taking xanax xr, or are you still wanting to wean off it? Just curious. I need new options, and that was the next one my dr. wanted to try. We've talked before and I knew the xanax xr was working for you, but was curious why you wanted to change when it was working.
Hi American Dancer, my psychiatrist wanted me to get to a certain level of the liquid prozac (5MG) (I just got to that point a week ago) and stablilize for four weeks on that amount...keeping the Xanax XR during this time. Initially I misunderstood him thinking I could start tapering when i "felt better". He says I still need to wait another month and then we can talk about cutting down to .5MG of the Xanax for one month and then hopefully the last .5 the next month. I'm hopeful as I've seen what it's done. At first I was soooo petrified at the addiction/tolerance/withdrawal thing that you hear about but then I realized "Hey! This is working for me....let's listen to the doctor"....that's where I am with it at this point. Where are you now in all this? And you know what? I've talked to so many people who have been on benzos for decades....at this point I just feel like whatever it's going to take to keep that dreaded panic/anxiety away is just fine!! :jester:
I have been taking Xanax for about two weeks now(.5mg pills, half in morning half at night) and I think its helping. My issue is the taking as needed, my anxiety basicly will last all day and having to pay attention to this and run a business is just a pain in the butt, I like what I am reading about the Xanax XR and am going to mention it to my doctor at my next visit.
