I'm sorry to hear about your parents' stance on medication. Hopefully you can help them do research to find out that they aren't as bad as they think they are. It's very hard to tell which drugs work for which people, which is part of the reason it's a guessing game in the beginning... Zoloft, then Welbutrin, then Lexapro, and so on... until something works.

It's important to give each drug you try a chance to work. A lot of people have given up after a week or two or three b/c they either didn't feel "better" or they felt worse. Unless the side effects are unbearable, you should give the drug a fair chance to act. In the meantime, like bulletinboard25 and hry33 said above, a benzo might help you out quite a bit until you find something else that works long term and is safer. Xanax and Klonopin are popular, as is valium. But remember that these benzos aren't really intended for long term use, and CAN BE addictive. Hence they are much more dangerous than SSRI's.
