Weight Loss board

Hello, This is my first post. I am 5'9 inches tall and weigh 195 pounds. I need to lose weight and I was thinking of using Xenical or Meridia. Out of the 2, which one do you guys recommend. Thank You! :)
Oh Good Weeweejujubee, I hope your doctors visit goes really well. :)
I am going to the doctors this Wednesday to get on Meridia or Xenical or even Phentermine. When I called to make the Appointment the receptionist said most of his patients were on Phentermine. I think I want Meridia or Merida with Xenical. If I can just stop thinking about food or stop being hungry that would really help me, and from what people on Merida seem to say is it does that. So I wish you much luck and can't wait to hear how was your visit. :)
Well I tried Xenical last year and i did not like it at all, i found if you passed gas your clothes were ruined because of the fat that came out it was oily and orange, nasty... make sure you wear a panty liner. I also tried phentermine it worked awesome first time round I has so much energy it was incrediable the only side effect was insomina, I lost 33 pounds in five weeks kept it off for about a year then a got careless. I tried it again and i had really bad anxiety attacks so I was scared to keep using it . So I am now trying Dospan it is something like phentermine but it is suppose to be better and I have been takin it for about 11 days and I think I have lost around 8 pounds. I got to the doctor on Wed for a check up but I have had no side affects so far which is awesome. If anyone out there has tried Dospan please let me know your experiences. :)
Is Meridia prescription only? I've heard that Xenical is going to be sold over the counter, but I don't know when, or if they will change the name when it goes OTC. Does anyone have this information?
I saw on the news that they may put a hold on the xenical over the counter because it may have a relation to colon polyops (sp.).I hope it isn't linked and does come out though it's a great bad food deterrent for me.
Hi -

In response to this question, I just wanted to say that I used to weigh a lot myself even thought I have managed to loose the weight in ways i shouldn't and wouldn't recommend. I am only 19 years old, and in my second year of pharmacy school now, but during my teen years took several (5) medicines for seizures in which made me gain a LOT of weight. Made me hate my appearence. It made me never want to do anything that normal teens did, but also made me do a lot of growing up and wanting to help others. I work in a pharmacy now for an internship and see people every single day buying these diet pills. I see the Xenical and the Meridia bought on a daily basis, but without insurance they are both really expensive products. From personal knowledge, there are not many insurances that will pay for diet pills but there is a drug that a lot of people have never heard of called Tenuate (generic name is Diethylpropion) in which is kind of expensive but way cheaper than the other two drugs. Its made for MAJOR weight loss patients. I recommend it to people because its only made to take for 4 weeks, then stop taking it for a week, then take it for 4 weeks, then off a week, then take it for 4 more weeks. You only take 3 rounds of this drug and on average people loose about 75 pounds. How it works is it speeds up your heart (the cardio exercise) and puts your body like its exercising without you having to workout) Bad thing is, you can not take if you have high blood pressure, OR seizures. My doctor put me on this drug for two weeks after i had lost all my weight on my own, just to trim up the excess skin and i lost about 20 pounds. Something you all should ask your Docs about. Any questions about 2003 i weighed 220 pounds at 5 foot tall, i now weight 118, Any questions, anyone can email me at REMOVED.

I was wondering. I have started Meridia today is my 2nd day. I am on 10mg. I was wondering what everyone else is on that it's so successful. Should I ask my Doc for 15mg instead?

I took Xenical and hated it. The oily/orangey stuff is just awful.

So far I'm having no side effects on Meridia but it's only day 2.

Funnewfie, How long did you take the Xenical before you noticed it was doing this to the fat? My husband is taking it and he hasn't noticed any changes in anything. Thanks for your help.

My doctor wants to put me on meridia or phentermine. I went for a checkup and he suggested it, I didn't even ask. I'm not entirely sure right now. I think it would help to have something to control my appetite, as I definitely have issues there. I'm between therapists right now (my last one was a nutcase), so I'm hoping to get a referral to somebody who specializes in eating issues this time. But until I get my mind under control, it seems like I just keep gaining. I was on topamax for migraines for a while, and I stopped gaining, but when I went off of it, the gaining started again.

The warnings about phentermine being addictive are kind of scary, so I may try to go with meridia. But we have to check with the neurologist first to see if it's okay with my seizures.

I also have to check with my insurance company. Xenical is on their approved list, but I don't want to take that, and I'm not sure how much it would help since I usually eat a low fat diet anyway (just way too much of that low fat diet...). So I'm going to see if insurance covers the other two, and if there's any way to get it for the cheaper copay rather than the more expensive copay that they use for meds not on the list.

But I think it might help to be able to lose some weight while I get the mental aspect under control, so then I can keep it off.
