There is a book, The Mood Cure by Julia Ross that I have heard recommended.

A couple of things that may be helpful - one is eating sufficient protein spread throughout the day (at least 15 grams per meal, figuring 3 meals per day). Cutting out wheat (refined, whole grain, whatever) is REALLY helpful for some people with mood issues.

There was a test a while back that showed either 5-HTP or St. John's Wort was just about as effective as Zoloft - unfortunately, I don't remember which, but it ought to be easy enough to search out.
