Alternative Medicine board

Hi guys,

I have been diagnosed with having an anxiety disorder and was on prozaz, paxil, and zoloft(not at the same time). Eventually I decided that I didn't want to continue with the medication, and i was fine for a while, but the last few months have been a little hard (especially after 9/11) and my anxiety has returned (milder though).

Is there anything that I can use to treat my anxiety or at least to suppress it? I'm looking for immediate relief (like if I have an anxiety attack) and something for the long run. I'm very open to trying out different methods of curing myself. Someone mentioned Acupuncture to me, you think that would help?

Thanks,

Dana.

Hi there,
A lot of us are in the same boat as you, so dont feel alone! I am also on zoloft and xanax for anxiety and mild depression, and am looking into alternative medicine. The key really is to do lots of research and decide what you think is best for yourself, and of course to talk to your doctor. Visiting a holistic or naturopathic doctor if possible is a great idea, because most general practitioners know very little about alternative meds. Someone above cautioned about using sam-e, but keep in mind that there is controversy over most drugs or alternative meds that are out there. Example- kava has been banned in many countries because of evidence of liver damage with long term use. There are excellent resources on the internet, in bookstores and in libraries where you can find info about all of this. I highly recommend a book I just bought called "The Natural Physician's Healing Therapies" by Mark Stengler, N.D. It has some really great info. Good luck!
