TMJ Disorder -TemporoMandibular Joint board

Hi Saaraah:

That's great that some of your symptoms are lessening. Sorry to hear about the depression but I know where you're coming from. Seems near impossible not to get depressed when you've been living with TMJD for a while.

I've been on a couple of antidepressants (amitriptylene, celexa). I felt awful on the amitriptylene. I have allergies and often react to medications. I think the celexa would have helped, but with both I found that after 4-5 days I was waking up with my teeth so tightly clenched together, it was unbelievable. So, I stopped taking them. I'm afraid to try something else. A number of them "may" cause dry mouth. I'm worried about that making my gums worse. The homeopath had me on SAM-e (good for mood, ligaments and a number of other thigns) for a while. It's expensive, but beyond that made my moods just crazy and depressed me more. He also tried 5-HTP (which helps with trytophan and seritonin in the body, should aid sleep, help moods). I tried this for 1-1/2 days and it made me feel seasick. It was evil  I felt like I was going to be sick, so that was the end of that. So, I haven't had much luck although an antidepressant would certainly help.

I'm not telling you this to discourage you. Once I get my gums under control, I'll give it another try. There are a lot of people who had great success being on antidepressants. I very much hope you're one of them :)

I spoke with the dentist's office today and they've moved up my appt to next week. I'll miss you by one day! Good luck with the night splint.

Take care.
Arleen

Arleen,

Have you maybe tried a lower key antidepressant, I went through Effexor, Celexa, Zoloft, Pamelor and Vivactil then tried a very low dose (15mg) of Elavil, it has helped with a deeper sleep for me without many of the side effects of the others.
