Discussions that mention zoloft

Back Problems board

Kathy,

Lexapro is an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor), and it is a reformulated version of Celexa. I actually take Celexa for my depression (20mg) which I am very happy with. I also did very well on Zoloft, but had some weight gain issues (others seem to lose weight on Zoloft).

SSRI's are very effective anti-depressants, but you need to find the right dose for you. The maximum dose for Lexapro is 30mg, so if the 20mg does not work you can go up a bit more. Other SSRI's are Prozac, Paxil, and Luvox.

I work at a Mental Health center as a Social Worker, so I have access to a ton of information. Hope it works out with the increased dosage!

Hi Everyone

I hope you don't mind me jumping in, but I have a few questions that I would like to ask. I am also on Celexa, and I did not have any side affects like I did with the Paxil CR. The Paxil CR upset my stomach for hours, so I stopped taking it after a few days. My doctor said that the Celexa has less side effects then most of the antidepressants out there.

I too have a hard time remembering things, such as what I did yesterday and what day it is, but I thought that it was being caused from my depression. I had no idea that this was a common side effect of antidepressants. I can't imagine not taking the Celexa, so I guess I will deal with being forgetful.

Jdog,
What do you mean that the Celexa made you run off with the mouth? I am curious what you mean by that. Did you talk a lot? I hope you don't mind me asking you this question, and you don't have to answer it if you don't want to, but, why are you on Effexor? When did you start taking it?

Hersheymommy,
Since you work in a Mental Health Center, I am hoping you can answer some of my questions. Do antidepressants work differently, or are they all the same kind of medications just with different names? Ex: I know Paxil is used for several things like social problems, anxiety and ect...so what is Celexa used for? I have also heard that Zoloft causes weight gain, does Celexa? Is Prozac, Paxil, Effexor and Celexa basically the same exact medication? If it is, why was Celexa chosen for me? What are the differences between Lexapro, Celexa, Effexor, Paxil and Prozac? I am a little confused about antidepressantsand don't know much about them. This is all new to me! Here is my most important question, is Celexa going to kill my sex drive? Am I going to have a hard time climaxing? (sorry, I know it is a embarassing question,.... but I need to know!)I have not been on the Celexa long enough to feel the full effect, so I am a little concerned about this.

If anyone knows anything about the Celexa or knows the answer to any of my questions, please feel free to jump in.

Take Care,

Brenda,

In response to your questions, I hope this is helpful. :)

"Since you work in a Mental Health Center, I am hoping you can answer some of my questions. Each antidepressant is slightly different, even if it is just a reformulation of an old medication. They may each work slightly differently as an SSRI, and not all SSRI's will work for everyone because we are all biochemically unique. Each med. may have a slightly different affect on the receptor sights in the brain, you just need to find the one that works the best for yours.

As far as uses, many antidepressants are used for a variety of mental health concerns, such as anxiety, OCD, etc... Most doctors find out accidentally that a med. has more than one use, and then if the pharmeceutical company wants to spend a lot of money on trials, they can have it approved for those additional uses, extend their patent, market to a greater audience, and make more money, yada, yada, yada...

"I have also heard that Zoloft causes weight gain, does Celexa?"

Both Zoloft and Celexa can go either way. The doctors I work with have found that some people gain on Zoloft and Celexa, and other lose weight. Based on personal experience, my weight has not fluctuated more than 5 pounds on either medication.

"s Prozac, Paxil, Effexor and Celexa basically the same exact medication? If it is, why was Celexa chosen for me? What are the differences between Lexapro, Celexa, Effexor, Paxil and Prozac? I am a little confused about antidepressantsand don't know much about them. This is all new to me!"

See 1st paragraph.

"Here is my most important question, is Celexa going to kill my sex drive? Am I going to have a hard time climaxing? (sorry, I know it is a embarassing question,.... but I need to know!)I have not been on the Celexa long enough to feel the full effect, so I am a little concerned about this."

Please do not fret about embarassment, as I do not blush easily. Again, each of us is unique, so not everyone will experience every side effect, and some people do not experience any. I have found, both personally and professionally, that Zoloft does tend to affect sex drive quite often. However, the good news for you isx that I have not found that to be the case with Celexa. I have been on 20mg of Celexa for a while know, and I have noticed any impact on my sex drive or performance. Hopefully you will have the same luck.

I hope this helps. Any more questions, feel free to ask (no matter how odd).

Anne :)
Linda,

Please don't apologize for your questions. I am happy to help. As far as the Wellbutrin, it is an okay anti-depressant. Have you ever tried an SSRI like Zoloft or Celexa? They work very well, and many clients (and myself) respond very well to them. Please keep in touch on how you are doing!

Anne :)
