Addiction & Recovery board

Hey everyone,
I have recently posted in the pain management boards and have come here tonight to check this board out. I have a question for anyone who could maybe help me. I have a ruptured disc and a bulging disc in my neck, also nerve damage in my right arm all due to work. This all happened in 1999. Well, I started going to a pain doc. He has worked with me and finally after about 6 months, got me on meds that have helped me for 5 years! Neurontin - 800 mg. (4 nightly), oxycontin - 40 mg. twice daily, celebrex - 200 mg. twice daily, remeron - 45 mg once daily, zoloft - 50 mg. once daily, flexaril - 10mg. 4x's daily, and nexium, once daily. Ok, here is the thing......I have been on these meds for about 5 and a half years, without any problems and my pain doc has ALL patients of his to go through drug screens at random, to see if patients are 'really' taking their meds, which is totally understandable, considering 'some' people sell their meds instead of taking them. I have passed these with flying colors. Never had a problem. The problem is with work comp. They have stopped paying and haven't paid in quite sometime. I knew they weren't paying but what I didn't know is that my doc has gotten tired of not getting any payment and has refused to see me until work comp has agreed to pay. Well they have finally agreed, but they haven't told my doc 'when' they would actually send the check. They said they would pay up until April of 2004 and that leaves me owing around $350.00, and the lady in the doc's office asked me how I plan on paying the $350.00. I told her that I plan on paying it in full. And I asked them if they will they go ahead and make my next appointment when I come in to pay that amount. Then she preceeded to tell me that until W/C pays, the doc will NOT see me and let me say this...... there is no telling WHEN w/c will pay!!! I will not have any means of my meds! I know that these drugs should not be stopped suddenly. Is it legal for him to just stop seeing me cold turkey???? Just because of W/C issues???? I have a lawyer on this case also. He said to go to another doc. There are no other pain docs here. We live in a small town. Please give me some legal advice!! I am so afraid that I will have severe withdrawals! I mean, I have to take 40mgs of oxycontin, twice daily and sometimes if I'm just a little late taking my next dosage of oxy for the day, I can feel that terrible feeling of withdrawals! I have a friend that was in sorta the same predicament. She got hurt and ended up losing her job. Since she no longer had a job, and no insurance, this same doc stopped seeing her. She was on a series of meds similar to mine, only a less mg of oxycontin (20mg twice daily). She informed me of the withdrawals that she suffered and said that it is something she wouldn't wish on her worst enemy. So, she went to a lawyer and filed a suit on the makers of oxycontin, and the lawyer told her that she would also have to sue the doc that prescribed them to her. Well, when this doc got the news, he compromised with her, asking her to sign papers, taking him off the suit, if he would start back seeing her again. Well, she did. He put her on Methadone this time. I told her that I have heard that it is 10 times worse coming off this drug than oxys. Don't know this to be true though.
I just don't know what to do. I am so afraid that I'll have to be put in detox if I have to come off these drugs!! What are the symptoms of coming off oxys?? I know they have to be bad!! I have NEVER taken more than what my doc has prescribed to me. Never been a junkie in any kind of way. I still work a full time job, although I've had to be put in the office where I work, because of working in production is what caused me to be in the shape I'm in now. And I have permanent restrictions of no repetitive flexion or extension of my arms and a permanent nerve loss, 25% in my right arm due to my ulnar nerve being damaged......Please advise me if I can sue this doc if he just all of a sudden stops seeing me because of Work Comp!! Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!
Hello and welcome....i don't know much about work comp. and pain doctors, but i am sure that he just can't stop your meds....ask them to at least give you a urine screen and one more refill. Your lawyer doesn't think there is anything wrong with this, especially since all the meds. you are on. Oxy and zoloft alone are gonna be a very rough withdrawal. I would try to find another regular doctor, tell him your situation and pray he is sympathetic and either assists you in withdrawal, or refills your scripts. I feel for you, you truely NEED these meds to function, how far are you til you are "out"???
I would find another doctor AND another lawyer. Hang in there, and do some research on your legal rights, and workers comp.
This doctor seems like an a**!
Hang in there

My lawyer has had this case ever since W/C came into the picture. And the reason that the case hasn't already been settled is because w/c has paid for my meds up until a few months ago and then they stopped, then i had to start turning them in to my health insurance. They paid all but my co-pay, thank God!! So I just hate to drop my lawyer after it being this long and he said that it's fixing to be settled and if I get another lawyer, it'll probably start all over again. The urine screens are not an issue, because I've passed everyone that he has ever given me, he knows that I have been taking my meds. I'll tell you, I am sooo scared of the withdrawals and the pain that I'm gonna be in when I have to stop taking my meds, because these meds have helped me so much!! And I don't think my lawyer understands about withdrawals from these meds. He just told me to try to make an appointment with another doc, but that's a problem too, because he's the only pain doc around my little small town. Yeah, this doc knows the how the withdrawals will be but doesn't seem to care. I thought about threatening him (hate to do that) about the oxy and celebrex suits that so many people are doing right now. I know that when my friend did this, and his name was involved, he started back seeing her, if she would take his name off the suit, and she didn't have ANY insurance whatsoever!! He's got her taking all her regular meds again, except the oxys, he put her on methadone instead. I've heard that methadone is 10 times harder to stop taking than oxys. But anyway, this really has me down, just thinking about it. I have about 1 week's worth left, but I don't know how to taper down with that amount of them left, because you're not supposed to half the oxys, yet I've tried to take just one of them and oh my goodness, the agony of it!!!! I sure didn't know you had withdrawals with zoloft! I thought they would only be with the neurontin and oxys. Wow, now it's even scarier! Please keep me in your prayers! I really need prayers at this time......maybe w/c will pay before I run out so I can continue to see my doc, but then again, I may just have to get into some kinda rehab. Thanks so much for listening, Konnie
P.S. How long should I expect to be in withdrawals?????????
Konnie....w/d will last about a good 2 weeks for the oxy w/d and the Zoloft lasted until i started it up again...with the zoloft, the anxiety and depression is unbearable. You NEED these meds, i would try to talk to your MD today, once again. Explain you are worried about next week, worried about withdrawal. He, being a pain management doctor, should be very sympathetic about it, but he sounds like a money hungry pill prescriber.
Well work to try to find another doctor or to get in to see your regular doctor. You have a week, actually less than that. Ask your doctor what he expects you to do next week when you are outta meds. Have your lawyer call him. To get off of oxy, they ususally use Percocet, then vicodin, then darvocet.....It is a very long drawn out process, because the w/d is pretty intense. I have to tell you oxy is not something just to wake up one day and quit....either is zoloft.
Keep me posted...i am worried about you. Sounds like you should consider traveling a little outside your town to find a new doctor. A little traveling is better than w/ding from oxy and zoloft all at once!!!!!
I have a feeling that your doctor is gonna refill you though.....make sure you give him a call and tell him your concerns today....hell go down there and talk face to face!!!!!
post back soon, i will do some research myself, i have a lawyer in our family and i will see what he says. I will post to you after i get ahold of him, mid-morning.
luv,
LISA
