Alright here's the facts,
I'm an 18 year old female, i've been suffering from major depression for over two years now as well as anxiety issues and panic attacks. my list of previous medications include Effexor, Wellbutrin, Lexapro, Prozac, Atavan, Xanax, and a couple things for sleep. oh, i don't sleep. Currently i'm taking 100mg of zoloft.

i was wondering if anyone could inform me on options like St. John's or SAMe.. or maybe even just a good multivitamin to boost my energy.

to keep in mind: i have trouble swallowing large pills

I would suggest being very careful when trying to add herbs in with anti-depressants.

Mixing an MAO Inhibitor (thories point to this being a function of St. John's Wort) and an SSR Inhibitor can be very dangerous.

It would be very important in your case to stay in contact with your doctor before adding any herbal remidies into the mix.

Also, so far as sleeping or weight changes, this is a common problem with people using SSRIs like Zoloft. In your case it seems seeing a nutritional councelor, with minor dietary changes, and potentially a change is carbohydrate intake could solve your sleeping patterns and especially your low energy.

If you already have blood sugard problems an SSRI may not be a good choice for you and an MAOI may be a better choice because SSRIs can mess with the bodies ability to handle carbohydrates significantly.

So, yea, herbal remidies may not be the right choice ... but if your doctor and a nutritional councelor are working together they should be able to help you significantly with sleeping patterns, weight changes, and energy levels.

Have you tried counseling? A good counselor trumps any amount of drugs for the long term. In the short term, I would suggest L-Tryptophan. It's natural. It's an anti-depressant and a sleep aid. You can get it online, but I've also recently seen it at my local health food store. And, I'm talking about L-Tryptophan *not* 5-HTP. 5-HTP is like Tryptophan's ugly step-child. It's terrible. But Tryptophan is really good.

However, I reiterate, none of it is worth anything unless you are able to talk out your problems with a good counselor.

Good luck with it.

Best,
Caat
