You really touch on a good point...the subjective nature of the diagnosis. After my very first (30 min) visit to the pdoc, I was shuffled out the door with free samples of Zoloft and encouraged to begin the experiment. I use that term because no part of my condition underwent objective testing. No test exists to measure the amount of serotonin present in the brain of a living person, yet I was given an SSRI as an experiement. I have never taken it.

Thirty years ago, my mother was started on the same path of experimentation. For the last ten years or so, mom was taking medicine to counteract high levels of dopamine. Yet no tests were ever done to prove that she really had such a condition. She was certainly psychotic, but the medecine she took did nothing to improve her mind and it destroyed her physical health.

I feel I have exhausted all opportunities for non-pharmacological therapy. However, I know what some of these drugs can do, and frankly, it scares the hell out of me. It's going to come down to what I am willing to risk for a chance to get better.

Thanks for the responses.:)
