: Thanks for taking the time to read this. Since last November I've been having strange issues with my heart racing. Not only is the heartbeat sporadic, so is the frequency (maybe a week will go by, maybe a day), as well as duration (current episode is still occuring after 14 hours). Way back in the beginning, I went to my doctor who sent me home with a heart monitor for 24 hours and did some lab tests. Of course, I didn't have an episode and everything checked out a-ok. My neighbor who is a nurse told me to go to the local volunteer fire department during my next episode and let them make a strip of the heartrate to give to my doctor. I did that last night.

: The guys on duty couldn't give me any advise legally, but they were very interested in what they saw. My heart would beat normally 5 or 6 times, then beat 'supra' 10 or 12 times, then beat normally maybe 2 more, then fast 8, then maybe 3, then maybe 12... no regularity to the irregularities of the heartbeat. Other symptoms include lightheadedness, tense, heavy chest (like when you have a cold), and a number of times that I've had to sleep with this, my fingers and hands fall asleep.

: I'm 38 years old, in reasonably good shape (though I don't exercise like I should), weigh about 180-185 (6'0) and have always been healthy. I've been avoiding caffeine. I'm an occasional drinker (a beer a day average or a glass of wine), but some of my earlier and worst episodes were after nights of heavy drinking and partying. Could it be a reaction to alcohol? I gave up my once-a-week cigar habit when it started.

: Is it ok to exercise or do heavy work during these episodes? The current one started after a long day of heavy exertion in 95 degree heat (lifting and placing railroad ties).

: Lastly, I tried some tricks the guys at the station recommended: holding my breath and bearing down... hand in ice water and face in ice water, but have been unable to stop the current episode.

: So, whaddya think? I've got two little girls: a 3 year old and 1 year old, and I want to do what's necessary to watch them grow up and I'd like to get old and grey alongside my wife, but I'm not sure how serious to take this or if I should just learn to live with it.

: Thanks for your help and suggestions!
: Peace,
: Randy
Hi Randy, I have had a fluttering feeling in my chest(pac's) and occasssionally a rapid heartbeat for a few seconds, the only way to know that everything's okay with your heart is to have the proper testing-holter monitor, and echocardiogram, done by a cardiologist. It's worth it to have these tests done so you can get the proper treatment and advice.
