: : Hi...I'm a 16 year old boy...I had open heart surgury for aorticstanosis June/1999...My aortia was replased w/ my pulminary valve and my pulminary valve was replaced by a cadaver...It left me with a pretty noticible scar...It has faded but I am really uncomfortable with it...I was just wondering if anyone knows how I can help diminish the appearince of this scar so it is a lot less noticible...thanks for your help.

: I know of no way to really diminish the appearance of the scar from open heart surgery. It will eventually fade.

: Once it has completely healed, you may want to consider some shade of pancake makeup, this might help, but do not put anything on your scar without checking with your doctor.

: I had open heart surgery over 8 years ago, a quadruple bypass, and now I have to look twice in the mirror to notice that it's there. I am white.

: The thing is a heart patient trys not to go without a T-shirt or shirt. In addition to my chest scar, I have a long scar along the inside of my left leg, because when I had open heart surgery, they cut the leg as long as they needed to harvest the vein they took from my leg. Nowdays, for bypass surgery, if they must use the vein from your leg, it is done with usually two short incisions. The point I'm making is that I have a scar both down the center of my chest as well as along the inside of my left leg. As a result, I don't wear shorts. At the same time, I don't let the fact get to me that I have these scars. I just consider how lucky I am to be alive, and so should you.

You can try a poduuct called MEDERMA. It is available over the counter but most drug stores keep it behind the counter cause it costs about $27.00 a tube, but it works very well. It is recomended by cosmetic surgens. I had a Heart Transplant 7 weeks ago and my scar is fading already. if you have an ols scar it may take a little langer, but the tube lasts a long time. You just rub a little on the scar about 3 times a day. Try it.
