: : It has been documented that I have atrial fibrillation. My doctor wants to put me on either Betapace or Rythmol to correct this condition. As I understand it, the initial doseage of these drugs requires a 48 hour stay in the hospital for monitoring as they can potentially can have a life threatening effect on the heart. Does anyone have any experience with taking these drugs, know the side effects, or know of any other alternative to correct the AF???
: Frank, I was on betapace for about two weeks Most individuals tolerate it well, I could not. 12 hours after the initial dose my ears started to ring and my neck was covered with bright red blotches. As soon as I got home, the worst possible depression hit me, I could not stop crying even when I tried. My ears were still ringing , my neck boiling red and also diarrea begun to plague me. I entered hospital again and was put on norpace. Norpace nor amiodarone stopped my AF episodes, so I am on cardizem now.. I still have episodes, but they are not so severe. By the way, tinnitus became a permanent nuissance, and my neck is still red. I wish you much luck with your search for cure, it wont be easy. [email protected]

Thank you Marja for your kind reply. I am sorry that you had such a bad experience with Betapace. This message board has been very helpful in the process of trying to make an educated decision. Given the potency of some of these drugs, it is not an easy task in deciding which therapy is right for me in correcting the AF. Thank you again. Frank
