: We're awaiting her first blood test results (hepatitis)but meanwhile we're all a little freaked out by the lemon-yellow color of her eyes, and the yellowish tint to her skin. She's really weak with a high heart rate and we don't know what to do. The doctor just said to drink a lot of water and eat healthy foods, but isn't there anything we can do to get rid of the yellow??? It's so sci-fi it's eerie.......

: Thanks for your suggestions

Dear Shannon,

It's hard to give you much information because you have not given much to go on.

What hepatitis is the doctor testing for? Your sister should be tested for them all. In particular, she should be given the PCR-RNA test (Roche amplicore) for Hepatitis C, not the antibody test.

The reason for this is that she might have a ACUTE case of hepatitis C. If that is the case, it would not show up on the antibody test. (RIBA, ELISA)

If she came back as positive on the PCR-RNA, but negative on the RIBA or ELISA, she might do very well with immediate treatment, before the virus takes hold.

If your doctor will not, or cannot, get a grasp on this, a second opinion might be in order.

Also, there is treatment for Hepatitis B that should be started ASAP if she tests positive for HBV.

With HepA, she very well may be able to wait. But knowing sooner rather than later what you are dealing with is the way to go.

I hope this helps,
