Hi Maria:
First of all Don't Panic!!! I am only 30 years old, but was diagnosed with high bp 2 years ago. It is not the end of the world. First of all, have you checked your bp since you went to the doc? The bp changes almost constantly. Try doing it at one of those drug store machines, and try it at different times of the day. some people only have elevated bp in the doc's office, and they are perfectly normal the rest of the time! I think that you are doing the right things as far as diet and exercise go, and you are definetely NOT overweight, so I assume that is not the problem.

As for the question about OTC cold medications, YES they can increase the blood pressure if they contain Psuedoephedrine hydrochloride, or one of the other nasal decongestants. I'm not sure how long the effect lasts though. If you are concerned, go back to the doc, and ask them if you can lie down for 10 minutes to relax before he takes a bp reading. Try to relax, and stay calm (I know that is difficult in a doctor's office).

I hope this help a little. Take care
T
