: Jackie,

: I have suggested this to my dad and he thinks that it would be impossible for anxiety or stress to manifest into physical symptoms. I tend to disagree but how can I convince him to seek help for depression, etc. He is a stubborn man and mental health treatment has a certain stigma attached to it. I wonder if I can contact the doctor myself. Any other suggestions?

: Thanks,

: Amber

Amber,
Please tell your dad that anxiety/panic can most definitely cause physical symptoms. It can manifest itself in many of the body systems. Some of the symptoms are heart palpitations and chest pain, rapid breathing and shortness of breath, rise in blood pressure, fast heart rate,
tingling at various places in the body, headaches,
sweating, nausea, diarrheam extreme fear or feeling of impending doom, fear of losing control or fear of dying. Depression can cause unexplained pains in the body, hopelessness, and a feeling that you can't get better. I do not know how to convince your Dad to get treatment. Maybe you can just start with your family doctor. Someone who has anxiety/panic/depression cannot "help it" anymore than someone can "help" having any other illness such as diabetes. Good luck.
