: I was put on Atenolol 25mg for moderate HBP 157/95. After about two weeks my pressure would lower to 112/82 and then spike during the night to 117/110. It would also spike during the day at work. My Dr. increased the amount to 50mg per day. After one week of being dizzy to where I couldnt walk without being careful and so fatigued that my back muscles gave out and caused my upper spine to compress to where I couldnt catch my breath. My pressure would still spike to 170/105. I was put on Procardia on top of this and I nearly passed out just walking. I am now on 25mg Atenolol again plus procardia but I am still weak as a cat. Anyone know of a better medication or Doctor???

Hi Dave,

My husband (age 37) was having the same type of side effects but with a different medicine. He was taking Lotensin. He would feel dizzy and feel like he was going to faint. He would have to leave his work during the day because the side effects were so bad. I really felt for you when I read your post because I know it must be awful going through this. I wonder if you can get a second opinion from another doctor. I've heard it's not a good idea to stop the medicine without your doctor advising you though. My husband did go off his medicine because his pressure was borderline high (with the doctor's advise) and we ended up buying our own blood pressure monitor. We found that his pressure was higher at the doctor's office and sometimes at work. But he has made some changes on his own that have seemed to help. He is taking garlic pills and potassium and a multivitamin. He is eating better and getting some exercise but probably needs more exercise. He is eating more fruits and vegetables and staying away from french fries and fast food (which is hard because he likes salty food). He usually will have a turkey sandwich, 1 apple or banana and water for his lunch at work. He has lost about 10 pounds in the last month because he is also overweight. I don't know if I've been of much help, but I want you to know their are other people going through this. Hopefully you can find the right medicine that can really help (with a doctor's advise) or if need be, a different doctor. Good luck to you and take care.
