My dad had been taking 50 mg. of Atenolol a day for the past
5 weeks. Atenolol in the evening, Zestril (20 mg.) in the morning along with 25 mg. of diuretic and Oxazepam (Serax) (15 mg.) to get his "artificial" 3-1/2 hrs. of sleep. His B/P: 180/100, 190/110 before taking (and sometimes during) medication. He would get a flushing feeling in his head after taking the Atenalol
and reported feeling more and more fatiged every day. It got to a point last week where he had almost given up hope for living because of his lack of energy and insomnia.
I took it upon myself to get with his doctor and immediately taper off all his medicine. My dad was in the worst physical and mental state (depression) I had ever seen him in.
The tapering-off from his medication began 7 days ago.
The flushing feeling in his head is gone. He can
now get an average 3 hrs. of sleep on his own plus 3-1/2 hrs. with Serax (15 mg.) and seems to be improving on his outlook of life.
Hoping for a continuing improvement in his condition, want to go back to "square one" -to get
my dad back to his full vitality again
before proceeding with any medication again. He is still feeling very weak, fatigued.
At this point he is down to 12.5 mg. of Atenolol at night (1/4 tablet), 12.5 mg. Atenolol at morning, 5 mg. Zestril at morning, and 12.5 mg.
of Diuretic (Hydrochlorothiazide) in morning.
He has also been taking the folowing these past 7 days: St. John's Wort (300 mg.) in morning,
Kava Kava 150 mg. in the afternoon and Melatonin (Purified Pharmaceutical Grade) 1.5 mg. at night.
His B/P reading: 170/90 at yesterdays checkup.
His mental outlook: Much, much, much more positive, which is the most important thing right now to me and the rest of his family.
Hope this info helps someone.
