: I am a laxative abuser who can't move her bowels anymore. I don't want to go back to the doctor in fear of what they will tell me. I have tried to stop taking laxatives but when I do I am cramped and bloated. I try eating fiber but it does not help. Please someone respond, Thankyou.

Hi Kai,
Janet is right you have to stop using laxatives. Constipation can result in all sorts of problems from bad breath to colon cancer. But,using laxatives can damage the nerves cells in your intestines. Constipation is usually caused by too little fiber and not enough water in your diet.

I think you need to take a water soluble fiber --psyllium that is found in Metamucil or Equate from Wal Mart.It is a safe bulk stool forming agent. You probably have what is known a Lazy Bowel Syndrome.I would start with using prunes. Take 4 to 6 prunes and boil them in water and let then stand overnight. Eat the prunes and drink the fluid the next morning. Prunes are one of the only foods that doesnot oxidize in your GI tract so they pass right through.
You also need to start eating yogurt to replace the intestnal "flora" that has been washed away by using laxatives.
ALSO --start getting more exercise.Lack of exercise is a big cause of constipation.
I think you should not eat dairy products, soft drinks, white wheat products, highly processed food ,sugar and cut back on the meat ---they are not easy to digest and have no fiber. You have your work cut out for you ----Take Care.
God Bless----Harry
