: Hi everyone. Got a question for you. A couple of months ago I had a barium enema. My doc decided on this instead of a colonoscopy due to my age (33) and low risk of colon cancer (not in my family, etc...). The barium enema was clear, but what I am wondering is if the barium enema would pick up colon cancer, and what is the advantage of the colonoscopy over the barium enema? I am still having right sided pain, and so I am still wondering the what if's. I would appreciate any insight. Thanks! Janet

Janet:
From what I understand, a barium enema (can't spell) can't pick up inflammation unless it's major. I'm having lower abdomen right sided pain as well. I think Harry said once that if he had not had a colonoscopy they would have missed his diverticulitis. If you like, I have my colonocopy Thursday and I'll ask my Dr. I know a lower GI can't pick up polyps unless they are large (or so I was told). Harry would know more about this than I would...Harry, yohoo...this is your jurisdiction!
