: I feel that I have a different case from most of the people who's messages I have read. I was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome when I was 18. I have never experienced a problem with this disease until last August. Since then, I am unable to go to a bar, resturant, mall, talk to someone for long periods of time, or be in a stressful situation without feeling like i am going to have an accident. I have been to several doctors who have no idea how to help. And I was recently put on Luvox, for obsessive cumpolsive dissorder(which I don't believe I have). I felt it may be working, until recently when I now have this urgent feeling to immedietly go to the bathroom while I am at work. If anyone has a similar situation and would like to chat plaese write.

Jennifer
My IBS is exactly the same as yours. i also have Ulcerative Colitis and the docs are unable to distinguish exactly between the 2. Every time I leave the house I work myself up so much that I feel I need the loo! It took be a long time to realise that this wasn't the UC. I went to the doc and explained everything. She was brilliant. She explained that I could try going on a very mild depressant (which isn't as bad as it sounds - although I personally didn't want to take any more tablets). She also recommended CBT (Cognitive Behaviourial Therapy). This is not for mental problems, don't worry. It is a way of analysing and working through the 'association' problems that we are experiencing, i.e. each time we are put in a situation from which we FEEL there is no escape, in our case where there is no loo on hand (basically, the early stages of agraphobia kick in), we panic! My appointment has not yet come through, but I opted to give it a go. We are going to try to break the association I have with stepping outside the door and having stomach cramps!
If you feel this has helped, why not visit your doc and she if you can be referred. But my symptoms are nothing like what the people desxcribe here...although I have taken much of the advice given (in terms of diet mainly) and it has helped immensely"! Mail me if you want to chat: [email protected]
