: Hi there. I am 20 weeks pregnant and I have blood and mucous in my stools. I had this happening even before I was pregnant, but only had a ultrasound and barium swallow done. I was shceduled for an enima but had to cancel because of the pregnancy. The doctor gave me a rectal exam a few months ago for the bleeding and said I had some tears causing the bleeding. My stools are usually pretty large. My bowel movements have been much more regular since being pregnant, but not one time has there not been quite a lot of mucous.
: Can someone tell me how mucous gets there and if all this will harm my baby? I have really bad stomach problems very often also for years now, and it always seems to be because of acid or something with alot of gurgling and discomfort. I havent had much of an appetite since being pregnant and sometimes have to force myself to eat.
: Can someone give me some input on whats going on with me? What if my body isnt absorbing nutrients properly?
: Doctors can't do any tests until the babys here. Another 4 months.
: Please help,
: Thanks, Lanaya

Hi Lanaya,
Sorry about your problems but if you read much on this board you will find out I am a big believer in taking a water soluble fiber supplements. It is really the only safe bulk stool forming agent that can be taken daily. The blood is probably caused by internal hemerrhoids as well as tearing that are usually caused by not getting enough fiber in your diet (constipation).A supplement like Metamucil or Citrucel will make you regular and reduce the size of your stool.Your stool sould be about the size of a Quarter. Of course it would be best to get the proper kind fiber in your diet. But,most people just don't eat that way these days.

The foods that contain alot of water soluble fiber are: carrots, beets, broccili, potatoes, oatmeal, lima, kidney, soy, navy and other beans, most fruit except bananas, lintels and veggies. Water soluble fiber just makes your GI tract work properly. Meat and dairy contain NO fiber.
God Bless----Harry
