: I started having IBS symtoms when I was around 20 years old, from what I've read maybe my gall bladder wasn't working even then, 25 years later I had my GB removed, then really in trouble with excess bile, my Dr put me on Questran, a med that soaks up the excess bile, I've been on it for 10 years and have no more problems. theres a valve that lets bile out into your intestine (the duct rom the liver), if it stays relaxed bile comes out continously, if contracted not enough bile so you have constipation.

Hi Junie,
Questran is a medication that is used to lower cholestrol. It is not normally used for long term use and IBS.Your system needs fat and Questran absorbs it too--the problem with your treatment is it messes with your liver so you should get a liver function test run every so often. Too little cholestrol is not a healthy thing to have.

I think Your Doctor should re-evaluate your problem.--10 years is a long time to be on a drug that you may not need now.
Take Care----Harry
