: Hello, I have always had problems with constipation since early childhood, now my 4 year old and 4 month old are both have great difficutly with this problem. The oldest has been on mineral oil for 2 years and is going for the scope next month, the younger has been taking a laxitive for 2 months now. The GI wants to do the scope to see why the constipation still continues even after a menu and diet change and pushing liquids. I was just wondering if something could be heridtary and mabye I passed something down? Ever heard of this anyone? My mom also has problems.

Hi Amy. I can relate to you. I have four kids, and they all have suffered from constipation. I have always had the problem, and everyone on my mother's side does/did too. I am bothered, however, that your pediatrician would advise you to give your four month old a laxative. In the long run, this will damage his/her colon. The colon will become dependent on it, and will not work on it's own. The same is true for adults. One thing that worked well for my kids is to put a little Karo syrup mixed with water in a bottle. This worked everytime. They like it because it is sweet. Hope this helps. Take Care, Janet L.
