: I know the fatty acids in flax seed oil are great for cellular membranes' defenses and helps reduce risks of cancer. What I don't understand is why or how it effects IBS. I've been lurking here a while and started trying it in addition to fiber pills. I think it might be helping but I'm not sure if it's just psychosomatic. (Brief case history: I have terrible diarreah every morning, nausea, frequent pain and cramping and sometimes nearly black out because of it).

: Can anyone explain what flax seed oil does to help diarreah, cramping, and whatever else its been said to do?

: Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my message.

Hi Sera,
As you know I reply to alot of messages. I have from time to time suggested using flaxseed oil caps and other essential fatty acids to aid in stool formation and generally to help cell repair of the GI tract. I have never heard of using it alone for any other problems associated with IBS like cramping or bloating. There was a message posted on 9/07/00 from Judy L about how flaxseed oil cured her IBS. But, her IBS was a result of gallbladder removal. You may want to read her message and my reply.

I take Essential Fatty acid because I think it is a healthy supplement to take and it is not manufactured by your system or other things you take or eat and they are essential for your body to function. That's why they are called Essential. I have found that oils in general slow your digestion down so it would account for helping the diarrhea phase of IBS and help damaged colons.

I hope someone else answers your message and gives us more complete information.
I assume you are taking the minerals and vitamins that are being washed away by diarrhea ---could reduce cramping.
There is a good homeopathic remedy for nausea --Ipecac 30X--- taken as needed. It relaxes the neumo-gastric nerves that gives you that bad nausated feeling.
I hope this helps! God Bless---Harry
