: ... opportunities
: abound all around

: this past weekend i traveled alone
: from my little hometown of almonte ontario canada
: to the newark airport in new jersey usa
: and back

: this voyage necessitated the following personal verbal encounters
: [in chronological order]:
: my travel agent,
: my taxi driver,
: a canadian air ticket agent,
: a us immigration officer,
: a canadian air gate agent,
: a canadian air flight attendant,
: an air canada ticket agent,
: an air canada gate agent,
: an air canada flight attendant,
: an air canada wheelchair pusher,
: an ottawa airport ground tranportation agent,
: my taxi driver

: i had arranged for 'wheelchair assistance' at each end of both flights
: 'just in case' my meds didn't 'kick in' as required for mobility

: as things turned out
: i didn't need any assistance
: until the ottawa end of the return flight

: but since the possibility was always
: lurking minute by minute in the background
: i gave each person listed above my 'spiel':

: "i 'might' need assistance
: since i have parkinson's disease
: and sometimes my meds don't 'kick in' properly
: and if they don't, i can't walk
: and if they do, i can"

: each person was, without fail,
: helpful and understanding and patient:

: "if you find you need the wheelchair after all, just call me"
: "would you like to board the plane early anyway so you can take your time?"
: "can i carry your bag for you?"
: "one of our air canada colleagues here at ottawa has pd..."
: "can you make it up your stairs okay?"

: my "on/off" movement fluctuation phenomenon
: is naturally part and parcel of my daily life
: within my 'personal' circle
: of family and friends
: and
: is also deliberately part and parcel of my daily life
: within an ever-expanding 'social encounter' circle

: it is my personal parkinson's awareness campaign

Janet, I envy your courage in flying alone. The last time I attempted to do thid I bought the ticket and didn't take the trip and lost the cost of the trip. If you had an off period how would you have handled it if you were in a difficult situation where you couldn't use a wheel chsir? B ruce
